When this mid-sized community hospital approached our consultants, their application for Sole Community Hospital status had been denied. Hospitals with the Sole Community Hospital designation under the Medicare program are entitled to enhanced Medicare payments, easier access to the 340B drug program, and favorable payments under the TRICARE program, among other benefits. Its problem: the hospital could not qualify for a weather adjustment because the local weather station did not keep complete records, and therefore could not provide the data needed to prove that it rained the requisite amount in their area. Our consultants worked with more than 50 years of daily weather data to develop and propose extrapolation techniques to plug the gaps. Today, this hospital enjoys the benefits of Sole Community Hospital status, which means $200,000 annually to the hospital’s bottom line.
